Emily J asked:

Here’s the deal, I’m looking to get a bit more active and healthy, generally I don’t have time to make a proper breakfast, so I plan on taking a smoothie with me to school along with some sort of like muffin or toast or something. I’m really trying to eat breakfast.

Can somebody give me a healthy recipe? Or just what to add? I’d like it to taste good, I would prefer if it didn’t have like milk, I get a lot of suggestions for that, thanks!

Use about 1 cup of apple juice in a blender with any flavor of the following: 1 cup sorbet (i personally like hagen daaz peach.. and sorbet has no milk), 1/2 cup frozen fruit (i like to do it up with blueberries). Add sorbet/apple juice to achieve desired consistency. Another good combo is using apple juice, raspberry sorbet, and frozen strawberries. (apple juice is a universal juice to use for smoothies as its flavor doesnt dominate the smoothie). Enjoy!

    1 Cup Ice
1/2 Cup Low Fat Vanilla Yogurt
    1 Tbsp. Honey
1/2 Cup Frozen Fruit (any variety)
1/2 Cup Fruit Juice (non-clear citrus are good but apple cider will work as well — try not to use clear juices as they are too refined and high in sugar content often with added corn syrup).

Blend until smooth and serve in a tall glass with a straw. Enjoy!

If your looking to make this before you go to school you probably don’t want something time consuming. Here is what you will need to make very easy and fast smoothies every morning.

Frozen fruit. Buy a wide assortment. Try berry mixes and tropical mixes (you can pick and choose out of the bag for specific fruits or use them all together) as well as mangos and peaches. This way you fruit is already in bite sized pieces (saves you time), will last a long time (won’t go bad) and you can get a wide assortment so you don’t get bored with just one flavor all the time. Plus, they are frozen so your smoothies will come out cold and won’t get that icky lukewarm temp before you get to school.

You are also going to need lots of yogurt. Since you are trying to lose weight, try a low fat kind. You can get the large buckets of yogurt, or get the individual serving kind. The individual serving kind will end up costing more but you won’t have to measure it out (just use one of em per smoothie). Vanilla is a good choice but you can get assorted fruit ones to add even more variety to your smoothies.

Fresh Bananas. Try getting ones that are half perfectly ripe and half a tiny bit green so they don’t go bad before you use them all, or buy some of those green bags (mushy bananas are NOT tasty, even in a smoothie). Bananas are sweet and very good for you and will give you that perfect smooth and creamy smoothie texture.

Juice. Whatever is your favorite kind. Just make sure it is 100% with no added sugar. Cranberry and pomegranate juices are great because they have the added health benefits, but all juices, as long as they are 100%, are good for you.

Honey. Sometimes fruit can be a little too bitter or tangy even with the bananas and yogurt, so adding a little honey will sweeten it up and it’s better for you than pure sugar.

When you are ready to make your smoothie just empty a yogurt cup (or a few spoonfuls from one of those large tubs if you used those) into a blender. Add a handful of your frozen fruit of choice along with a banana (just break the nana up by hand into inch thick pieces), a shot of juice, and a ****** or two of honey. Blend until smooth. Taste first to make sure it isn’t to bitter or sour. If so, add a bit more honey and blend a bit more to mix it in. You’ll have no extra dishes and no real clean up. Just make sure you rinse out your blender with warm soapy water immediately every time as a blender with caked on gross is a PITA to clean up.

As far as recipes go, everything will taste good but some combos (like mangos and banana) will come out way too thick so you might have to add a little extra juice. Experiment with different flavor combos and have fun! Good luck with reaching your health goals!
